How to Fix Canon Support Code 1401
Canon Support Code 1401 means the printer does not recognize the printhead. The printer believes the printhead is either missing, installed incorrectly, or fundamentally incompatible.
Step 1: Reseat the Printhead and Cartridges
The most common cause is the printhead shifting slightly out of alignment with the electrical pins.
- Turn the printer on and open the scanning unit/cover.
- The printhead holder will move to the replacement position.
- Remove all ink tanks.
- Raise the printhead lock lever.
- Tilt the printhead slightly forward and lift it out completely.
- Immediately place it back into the holder, ensuring it sits perfectly flat.
- Lower the lock lever until it clicks securely.
- Reinstall the ink tanks and close the cover.
Step 2: Clean the Printhead Contacts
If reseating fails, dirt or ink is blocking the electrical connection.
- Remove the printhead again following the steps above.
- Look at the back of the printhead for the gold/copper electrical contacts.
- Wipe the contacts gently using a clean, dry, lint-free cloth. Do not use alcohol on these specific contacts unless absolutely necessary, as it can degrade the adhesive.
- Wipe the corresponding pins inside the printer carriage.
- Reinstall the printhead.
Step 3: Check for Compatible Cartridges
If you are using third-party cartridges, a faulty chip on a single cartridge can cause a short circuit that triggers the 1401 printhead error.
- Remove all third-party cartridges.
- Install a set of genuine Canon cartridges (even if empty) to see if the error changes from 1401 (Printhead) to 1600 (Ink Out).
- If the error changes, the printhead is fine, and your third-party cartridges are defective.
