Fixing an HP Printer That Prints Blank Pages

An HP printer outputting completely blank pages usually indicates clogged printhead nozzles, an unremoved protective tape on the cartridge, or a carriage seating issue.

Note: This troubleshooting guide involves physical maintenance of the cartridges and printhead.

Step 1: Verify Cartridge Preparation

If you recently installed a new cartridge, the protective sealing tape may still be attached, blocking the ink flow.

  1. Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to center.
  2. Remove the ink cartridges.
  3. Inspect the bottom of each cartridge. Ensure the plastic pull-tab (usually pink or orange) has been completely removed.
  4. Warning: Do not touch the copper-colored electrical contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can cause electrical failures or ink blockages.

Step 2: Clean the Printhead Manually

Dried ink can block the microscopic nozzles on the printhead, especially if the printer is used infrequently.

  1. Remove the cartridges from the printer.
  2. Identify the printhead (either integrated into the cartridges or a separate removable basket).
  3. Lightly dampen a lint-free cloth or coffee filter with distilled water.
  4. Gently wipe the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge and the corresponding contacts inside the printer carriage.
  5. If the printhead is integrated into the cartridge, gently blot the nozzle plate against a damp paper towel to draw out dried ink.
  6. Allow all components to dry for 10 minutes before reinstalling.

Step 3: Run the Built-In Cleaning Cycle

Most HP printers feature an automated cleaning routine accessible via the physical control panel.

  1. Load plain white paper into the input tray.
  2. Navigate the printer’s LCD screen to Settings > Tools or Maintenance.
  3. Select Clean Printhead or Clean Cartridges.
  4. The printer will run a cycle and print a diagnostic page.
  5. If the diagnostic page shows broken lines or faded colors, run the cycle a second time. (Do not run this more than three times to avoid wasting ink).

Step 4: Perform a Hard Hardware Reset

A firmware glitch can cause the printer to cycle through pages without deploying ink.

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the power cord to the wall outlet and the printer, then turn it on.
