How to Clear a Paper Jam in an HP Printer

Paper jams occur when media becomes stuck in the paper path, carriage area, or output tray. Forcing paper out can strip the gears or damage the pickup rollers.

Warning: Always disconnect the power cord before reaching into the printer to avoid electrical shock and to prevent the carriage from moving unexpectedly.

Step 1: Check the Input and Output Trays

  1. Remove all loose paper from the input tray.
  2. Check for any jammed paper in the tray area. If paper is visible, grasp it with both hands and pull it slowly and evenly towards you.
  3. Check the output tray and gently pull out any visible paper in the same manner.

Step 2: Access the Ink Cartridge Carriage Area

  1. Open the cartridge access door.
  2. Look inside for any crumpled paper.
  3. If paper is stuck beneath the carriage, gently push the carriage to the far right or far left to access the paper. Do not force the carriage if it is locked.
  4. Remove the paper slowly using both hands to prevent tearing. If the paper tears, ensure you remove all small fragments, as left-over pieces will cause immediate re-jamming.

Step 3: Clear the Rear Access Door or Duplexer

Most HP printers have a removable panel at the rear for clearing complex jams.

  1. Turn the printer around to access the back.
  2. Locate the rear access door or the duplexer attachment.
  3. Push the release tabs to remove the door or duplexer.
  4. Gently pull out any jammed paper from the rear rollers.
  5. Reattach the rear access door or duplexer until it snaps firmly into place.

Step 4: Clean the Paper Pick-up Rollers

Dust and paper fibers on the rubber rollers reduce traction, causing the printer to misfeed and report false paper jams.

  1. Lightly dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water (or isopropyl alcohol if heavily soiled).
  2. Locate the rubber pick-up rollers inside the rear access area or main paper tray.
  3. Press the cloth against the roller and rotate the roller upwards with your fingers.
  4. Allow the rollers to dry completely (about 10 minutes) before reconnecting power.
