Fixing an HP “Cartridge Not Recognized” Error

When an HP printer displays a “Cartridge Not Recognized” or “Incompatible Ink” message, the printer is unable to communicate with the microchip on the cartridge. This happens frequently with both original and third-party compatible cartridges.

Step 1: Clean the Electrical Contacts

Dirt, fingerprint oil, or dried ink on the cartridge chip prevents the printer from reading the cartridge data.

  1. Remove the affected cartridge.
  2. Locate the copper-colored electrical contacts on the back of the cartridge.
  3. Lightly dampen a coffee filter or a lint-free cloth with distilled water.
  4. Gently wipe the copper contacts from top to bottom. Do not wipe side-to-side.
  5. Wipe the corresponding electrical contacts inside the printer’s carriage.
  6. Allow them to dry completely before reinstalling.

Step 2: Check for Improper Seating

A cartridge that isn’t fully clicked into place will not align with the electrical pins.

  1. Remove the cartridge entirely.
  2. Re-insert it at a slight upward angle, pushing firmly until it clicks loudly into place.
  3. Close the access door and wait for the carriage to initialize.

Step 3: Hard Reset the Printer Memory

Sometimes the printer’s internal memory retains the error state even after the physical issue is resolved.

  1. Leave the printer turned on.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
  3. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  4. Plug the printer directly into a wall outlet and turn it back on.
