Fixing an HP “Cartridge Not Recognized” Error
When an HP printer displays a “Cartridge Not Recognized” or “Incompatible Ink” message, the printer is unable to communicate with the microchip on the cartridge. This happens frequently with both original and third-party compatible cartridges.
Step 1: Clean the Electrical Contacts
Dirt, fingerprint oil, or dried ink on the cartridge chip prevents the printer from reading the cartridge data.
- Remove the affected cartridge.
- Locate the copper-colored electrical contacts on the back of the cartridge.
- Lightly dampen a coffee filter or a lint-free cloth with distilled water.
- Gently wipe the copper contacts from top to bottom. Do not wipe side-to-side.
- Wipe the corresponding electrical contacts inside the printer’s carriage.
- Allow them to dry completely before reinstalling.
Step 2: Check for Improper Seating
A cartridge that isn’t fully clicked into place will not align with the electrical pins.
- Remove the cartridge entirely.
- Re-insert it at a slight upward angle, pushing firmly until it clicks loudly into place.
- Close the access door and wait for the carriage to initialize.
Step 3: Hard Reset the Printer Memory
Sometimes the printer’s internal memory retains the error state even after the physical issue is resolved.
- Leave the printer turned on.
- Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the printer directly into a wall outlet and turn it back on.
