How to Fix Canon Support Code 5100

Support Code 5100 on a Canon printer indicates a carriage error. The printhead carriage is being physically obstructed and cannot move freely along its track.

Step 1: Remove Paper Jams and Foreign Objects

The most common cause of a 5100 error is a small piece of torn paper.

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Open the main cover and shine a flashlight inside.
  3. Look at the far right and far left sides of the carriage path.
  4. Remove any crumpled paper, paperclips, or debris using long tweezers.

Step 2: Clean the Timing Strip

The timing strip is a clear plastic film that runs behind the carriage. It tells the printer exactly where the carriage is. If it gets smudged with ink or grease, the carriage gets “lost” and throws a 5100 error.

  1. Ensure the printer is unplugged.
  2. Locate the timing strip (a semi-transparent plastic band, roughly 1/4 inch wide, located just behind or above the carriage rail).
  3. Slightly dampen a cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol or window cleaner.
  4. Gently wipe the strip from left to right. Be incredibly careful not to unhook it from its springs.
  5. Wipe it dry with a clean cotton swab.

Step 3: Ensure Cartridges are Seated Properly

A cartridge that is sitting slightly too high will hit the roof of the printer casing, causing an obstruction.

  1. Push down firmly on the top of each ink cartridge until you hear a solid click.
  2. Check that all cartridges are perfectly level with one another.
  3. Close the cover, plug the printer back in, and turn it on.
