Clearing a Rear Tray Paper Jam in Canon Printers
A paper jam in the rear tray of a Canon printer usually triggers Support Code 1300. It requires careful physical removal to avoid tearing the paper or misaligning the feed rollers.
Step 1: Safe Power Cycle
Before pulling any paper, try cycling the power.
- Press the power button to turn off the printer.
- Wait 30 seconds, then press the power button again.
- The printer’s initialization routine may automatically eject the stuck paper.
Step 2: Remove the Paper Manually
- Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
- Close the paper output tray if it is open.
- Stand behind the printer and look down into the rear tray.
- Grasp the jammed paper with both hands.
- Pull the paper slowly and steadily upward. Do not yank, as tearing the paper will leave fragments deep inside the roller mechanism.
Step 3: Check for Foreign Objects
Often, rear tray jams are caused by small items falling into the feed slot.
- Shine a flashlight down into the rear tray.
- Look for paperclips, staples, torn paper fragments, or dust clumps.
- Use long tweezers to carefully extract any foreign objects.
Step 4: Clean the Feed Rollers
If the rollers are dirty, they will fail to grip the paper properly, causing immediate re-jamming.
- In the printer’s digital menu, navigate to Maintenance or Device settings.
- Select Roller Cleaning.
- Remove all paper from the rear tray.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to cycle the rollers. They will spin to clear off accumulated dust.
